Ten Most Useful Household Items

Clothes Dryer Stand: I know we love those old-school rope and pin system and no doubt they work wonderfully. They work even better if you are making a music video or are falling in love in a movie or a TV show. The girl is hanging clothes on the line and she catches the guy staring at her from his balcony or down the street. Stuff of legends I tell you.

There is a new way to dry our clothes now, but we can’t romanticize it for you. What we can tell you is that sometimes putting your clothes outside is not an option because the guy next door is a creepster that you don’t want staring at you, or it’s been raining for 4 days straight and you are out of clean clothes. Maybe you’re just not a line drying kind of person. This is for you. It folds, you can stack it away. It can be left outside because its good metal so there is no worry of it getting ruined because of rain or bad weather. It’s the perfect substitute or addition to the already working system.

2. Rolling Pin: Referred to in Pakistan as a Bailan. This is such a useful tool. I call it a tool because Rotis and Parathas are a way of life in Pakistan. We don’t just eat them we live them. There’s Naan, Garlic Naan, Cheese Naan, Sheermaal, Taaftaan, Alooparatha and you can stuff your paratha with pretty much anything and it will be amazing. But you can’t do any of that without a Bailan. Also, if you’re a mother you know that you are not a good one if you have not threatened to beat your child with one at least once in their lifetime. Okay, that was a joke. Don’t come at me. Let’s not threaten our kids with any object.

3. Gloves: It’s not hard to understand why we put gloves on this list. However, its more than just that. Its more than just putting on when you need to clean or want to keep our hands safe. You can use them to open jars and bottles that are hard to open, and the best part is that you don’t even have to put them on.

4. Baking Soda: Always keep this around the house. We need this for cooking, sure. If you search though, this handy little product is much more than a spice. You can clean with it; you make can make bad smells go away. You can whiten your teeth; we can keep going but we will let you Google it and then you buy a couple of boxes of this stuff.

5. Scissors: We always know we need it but then whenever we do need it, we can’t find them. Have you noticed that there’s always something that needs to be cut. Be it a tag on a shirt a loose thread. A wire, some packaging that is impossible to open. We have all these things we need scissors for, but we never seem to find them when we need them no matter how many we buy. We suggest you buy a couple and put them in every room in the house. Maybe even tie them to something. But then you will have to forbid your family from cutting them loose. See what we did there?

6. Candles: This is an easy one. We will always need them. The electricity problem is only getting worse since summer is getting closer and closer. Candles are a great substitute for having to worry about lighting everything up. Look we know it’s not the most practical of household items but think about it. It can save some energy when we need to, it can give us light when we need it. If they smell good and have calming effect during an otherwise frustrating and irritable time, even better.

7. Reusable straws: Every once in a while, we all need to use a straw. However, plastic straws are not good for the environment. We are not doing our world any favors by throwing away so much waste that cannot be recycled. How about use something that can be used as a straw and be washed and cleaned just like any other utensil, like a fork or a spoon. You can even keep it where you keep the rest of your cutlery. It’s a spoon, it’s a fork, it’s a knife…it’s a…it’s a…straw!

8. Reusable water bottles: speaking of the earth and the mess we are making of it we can also maybe do away with the plastic water bottles we keep buying. Its hotter now and we will need to drink a lot of water. Drinking water is a good thing. Ruining the earth in the process is not so great. Let’s ditch those toxic plastic bottles and make the reusable plastic bottles a household item that we don’t want to be seen without. It doesn’t have to be fancy, and it doesn’t have to cost us too much money either. We can get nice and cheap ones from regular grocery stores that are easily washable like all the other glasses in the house and can be easily carried around in a car or on a motorcycle. Should I do the Superman thing again or is once lame enough?

9. Coke: Now this is a weird one. Why would we promote something like this when we have been talking about staying hydrated and taking care of the world. We wouldn’t really and we are not. Coke is a really good cleaner. If you do happen to buy it for your guests once in a while or if it happens to be something that you end up ordering with your takeout because it came with a deal, then make good use of it. You can drink it. Once in a while there is no harm in it. But you know it will take that grime off your tubs and toilets and make them like new. Your faucets will be shining like they never have seen a day of use. Too bad it doesn’t clean up the human body in the same way.

10. Lemons: Now Lemons are a different story. They will clean you up from the inside out. They are good for consumption, of course we all know that. We can put them in our food because it is food. We can also use it as a cleaner. We can use it to whiten teeth. We can use it to cut through grease. We can use it to get rid of bad smells. Leaving some whole lemons in a smelly room will do the trick. It will take out the smell right out. That’s why you will find bowls of lemons in people’s bathrooms. No joke, that’s a thing. Aesthetically, if you have the counterspace it is a really nice look and makes the space brighter and shinier. Try it, if it doesn’t work, I will personally give you, your money back for the extra lemons you had to buy.

These are just some things that are easily available, or we already have around the house that can be used to different purposes that we probably didn’t have in our minds before. This is to make you realize that if we open our minds we are able to create so much more from one thing or situation.
